Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
