A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
